Try practicing some of these common Archeologist’s job interview questions with Pritish Kumar Halder:
1. Do you find human bones?
How to answer: It’s easy to get hung up on figuring out your single most impressive accomplishment. Instead, think of a few achievements that showcase your work ethic and values. If you can, pick examples that also tie back to the job you’re applying for.
Answer: “In my last position, I was working with an archeologist looking for evidence of early historic (AD1000) political development associated with the dried fish trade. But, hilariously we discovered human bones. And you know when human bones are discovered there is a protocol that is followed based on state and federal law.”
2. Who was your mentor?
How to answer: Employers ask this question to gauge the level of your personality and ensure your sources of motivation align with the role and institution. To answer, be as specific as possible, provide real-life examples and tie your answer back to the job role and/or the company’s mission.
Answer: “The archeologist I learned to admire both as a professional and a person is Dr. David Baerreis, university of Wisconsin. I had never met someone better who epitomized the content of a gentleman (the older sense of the word) and a scholar. He was scrupulously honest, scientifically rigorous, and always polite and helpful. I never heard him publicly refer to colleagues; even those I knew very much disagreed in, a negative light. He was a very formal person – the kind of individual you respected from distance.”
3. How do archaeologists make use of LiDAR technology?
How to answer: The interviewer uses this question to gauge whether you know the qualities you should have to be successful in your role as an archaeologist. In your response, highlight the knowledge of a specific field of LiDAR technology as you relate to the needs of the employer.
Answer: “LIDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging, a technique that uses remote sensing that uses pulsed laser light to measure variable earth’s distances. LiDAR technology is essential because it can be used on a very high range of land, including the most dangerous areas, rivers, forests, or for mapping surveys. We use LiDAR technology to help them see the different sites that were previously not known. Through a drone that can scan a wide range of land, the technology enables archaeologists to access more detailed data. I also use LiDAR technology to know the topography of a particular area. Some of the archeologists also use it to discover the different objects that were not seen previously.”
Not every question you will encounter when interviewing for Archeologist’s position will be related to a historical cultural resource management job. But those are the common topics interviewer can ask for selecting a qualified candidate.
