The interviewer asks questions in various research-based job interviews to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. The set of questions is here to ensure that you offer a perfect answer posed to you. While knowing the right answer is important, it’s essential to exhibit confidence during oral responses.

So get preparation for an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon job interview:

1.     What is the best way to use steroids for decreasing post-op edema following oral surgery?

How to answer: Interviewers often ask questions to learn more about your experience in the field. They want to ensure that you have familiarity with the surgical expertise when possible. You may want to emphasize your interest in helping assure potential employers to develop your skills and knowledge as needed.

Answer: I use steroids only when there is a very strong indication or some other indication requires it systemically.

IV, oral or IM are all accepted and efficient routes as long as we make sure the appropriate medication of proper dose is used. In the post-optwo-three period, I prefer to taper the dose over two to three days to prevent rebound edema if I choose to use it.

I prefer starting the steroids before the incision preferably at the time of induction or before intubation or as part of the pre-op orders along with antibiotic prophylaxis.

I follow and prefer an “opt-in” protocol rather than an “opt-out” protocol for prescribing the steroids.”

2.     Explain what is the difference between Endodontics and Orthodontics?

How to answer: The interviewer must ask questions that deduce your expertise. Therefore, make sure that you handle this with the level of knowledge the second question needs.

Answer:  “Let me explain,

  • Endodontics:  It is the branch of dentistry that deals with the physiology, morphology, and pathology of the human dental pulp and periradicular tissues. It has restricted the diagnosis and treatment up to the pulp and periradicular tissues only. They are root canal specialists and are trained to do complex root canal surgeries.
  • Orthodontics:  This word comes from a Latin word that means “straight teeth.”  Orthodontics is specialized in clear aligner therapy, appliance therapy and in braces, which are used to straighten teeth.”

3.     Explain what is trigeminal neuralgia?

How to answer: An effective response to this question might highlight your experience working with a team. Including your awareness of delegating the tasks to handle and ways that you’ve helped students resolve common issues. Preparing an answer to this question may allow you to respond promptly and confidently.

Answer:  Toothache is generally caused by dental disease due to infection. But, there is some uncommon condition like trigeminal neuralgia that causes toothache.  The trigeminal nerve is one of the main nerves which originates from the brain stem and enters the face and ends in the tooth bottom. When this nerve gets disturbed or damaged during an accident or while operation, it causes pain known as trigeminal neuralgia. Such condition is most commonly found among the elderly people and those having hypertension.”
