1.  Why do you want to be an architect?

 

How to answer:  This question is a great opportunity to showcase your passion for architecture and let the interviewer know what drives you in your career. Interviewers are gauging your interest in the field when they ask this question. Everyone’s answer will vary, but you can demonstrate your passion for architecture with a personal anecdote and/or by mentioning a person or experience that influenced your chosen profession.

 

Answer:  “I have a passion for people just as much as I do for buildings. As architects, we’re creating functional buildings for clients to use based on their varying needs and desires. Understanding our clients is imperative and ultimately fuels my passion for this field.”

 

2.  What skill has served you best in your architecture career?

 

How to answer:   This question allows interviewers to see how you rank your skills. They’re also looking to make sure you have the right set of qualifications that would make you a good fit for this position. Make sure to mention the skills listed in the job description as well as the top skills for general architecture candidates.

 

Answer:  “Excellent verbal communication is key for architects. This has undoubtedly been the most useful skill in my career. When problems arise, it’s important to know how to communicate with my team to resolve any issues and press on toward project completion. Good communication allows the quality of work to excel.”

 

 

3.  What architect has been most influential on your work or work style?

                                                          

How to answer:  When they ask this question, interviewers are testing your knowledge of architectural figures and trying to learn more about your background and values as an architect. Be sure to research the most influential architect in your career and explain why they have been influential on and significant in your career.

 

Answer:   “Frank Gehry has been the most influential figure in my architectural approach. His designs as a deconstructionist have inspired me to push the boundaries of my work. While elements of his designs appear fragmented, they blend cohesively to create astounding pieces of architecture. His complex style of architectural design and his contributions to humanity is something I aspire to achieve in this profession.”

 

Not every question you will encounter when interviewing for an architect position will be related to developing an entire complex of buildings design supportive job. But those are the common topics interviewer can ask for selecting a qualified candidate.
