1. What made you start a career in tech support?
How to answer: Interviewers often ask this question, mainly to assess how passionate the applicant is about the role. How do they see their job in terms of importance. The best way to answer is usually by outlining your interest in technology. Moreover, your passion for solving problems and working with people.
Answer: “Ever since I was much younger I knew I wanted to work in a tech-related field, as technology fascinates me. Later on, I discovered that I love communicating with people and understanding the issues they are facing. Working in IT support is, therefore, a logical step, as it allows me to be up to date with the latest tech and also help people daily.”
2. What do you think is more important for the role, technical knowledge or people skills?
How to answer: The interviewer knows that a successful IT support professional needs to have deep technical knowledge, but also strong communication skills. They ask you this question to see if you understand how both skills are important. Furthermore, what your personal view is regarding which is more important.
Answer: “I think they are both crucial for the job, but I believe that tech skills are slightly more important. The reason I say that is because I feel that our job is ultimately to help customers solve various issues. No matter how empathetic and well-spoken you are if you don’t know the solution to their problem. Indeed, it is highly unlikely that they will see their interaction with you as a positive one.”
3. What was your biggest mistake at any of your previous IT support jobs and how did you recover from it?
How to answer: This is an important question, as you want to seem honest and specific without implying that you are error-prone. You also need to show the interviewer that you learned your lesson and that you are not likely to repeat that mistake in the future.
Answer: “In a previous IT support role, our team was constantly receiving updates on the latest industry developments and practices. So that they can help us provide customers with relevant information. However, I was very passionate about my job and I often performed individual research on the most often-encountered customer issues. So, without me realizing it, I had developed my way of dealing with certain things.
This was not affecting my job, as I was well-prepared enough to give correct solutions. Although, they were different from what the organization was teaching us to say. Until one day, when a customer that I had helped a day before called us again, for a different but related issue. One of my colleagues handled their problem and gave a textbook solution that was not compatible with the solution. I had given them a day before, causing further problems. I then learned the importance of teamwork.”
