Try practising some of these common Historian’s job interview questions by Pritish Kumar Halder:

1.  Who is your favorite historical figure and why?

How to answer:  This question allows candidates to discuss an aspect of their field that fascinates them. Look for candidates who demonstrate critical thinking skills.

Answer:  “I am not picking one name. So, my favorite historical figures are:

Aristotle– Student of Plato and tutor of Alexander the Great, his writings delved into the world of so many subjects. Revered across western culture, and by medieval Islamic scholars as ‘first teacher’ for his input on politics, government, biology, metaphysics, ethics, logic, and rhetoric. Nearly 2,500 years after his death we still speak of him and his contributions. He is timeless.

Moreover, Marie Curie – Just a brilliant scientist, dedicated and far-thinking, and one of only four people to have won two Nobel prizes.

Roman general, consul, and dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla – whose epitaph read-only: “No better friend, no worse enemy”.

2.  What is the most difficult part about being a Historian for you?

How to answer:   Candidates should acknowledge the importance of diligence in their duties and how oversight can lead to research inaccuracies. Look for stories where candidates erred, rectified their errors, and learned a valuable lesson from the experience.

Answer:  “I think becoming a historian is not all that difficult. There are a few simple principles to learn and follow, and then you’re a historian. There are hundreds of sources of advice on what constitutes good history, starting with respect for the truth, even when it is uncomfortable, rather than dismissing it as “fake news.” Therefore, becoming a good historian is somewhat harder to research specific events or individuals.

However, ice skating, mathematics, plumbing, and riding a bucking bronco (I assume), it’s something that you can get better at my practice, so you can potentially keep improving all your life: finding new sources, analyzing in greater depth, writing more fluidly, etc.”

3.  Which book are you currently reading?

How to answer:  Historians should be avid readers and should try to contextualize historical events within other interesting fields, namely economics and sociology. Look for candidates who can describe how their chosen book gives them a new perspective on historical events when viewed from a different field.

Answer:   “I’m currently reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I must confess that I find many similarities between the journeys of Santiago, the boy from the book, and my journey. I’ve been also searching for “treasure”, for meaning, and pursuing happiness in life. It is one of the reasons why I applied for a job in your NGO. I’ve grown tired of the work of a corporate rat. I was doing the same historic events data entry simple tasks on a computer each day, never really seeing any impact on my work.

Working for your organization I’ll have direct contact with people. I’ll be in the field, and see directly the impact of my work. That’s the meaning I’ve been searching for, and I hope you will give me a chance to find it.”
