Almost all interviewers will appreciate confidence and pride in the work experience you have earned. Your passion for transferring these valuable skills to your future role or position.

Answer:  Ever since my first paper route at age 10 I’ve been doing something to keep myself busy and earn money. Back then, it was obviously about earning some spending money. What I didn’t realize was that I was starting the journey of establishing what I liked to do. And how I fit into the grand scheme of things. I then worked as a junior computer tech in my last 2 summers of high school. It was here that I discovered what I was passionate about and what I wanted to do. I enrolled in college to get my degree in computer sciences, and I have been working around technology ever since.”

2.           How did you determine the best way to delegate tasks in your last coordinator job?

How to answer:   An effective response to this question might highlight your experience working with a team. Including your awareness of delegating task to handle and ways that you’ve helped students resolve common issues. Preparing an answer to this question may allow you to respond promptly and confidently.

Answer: “At my previous job as a coordinator, I typically assigned tasks to my team members based on their talents and skill areas. This ensured productivity and contributed to well-planned corporate events. I would structure additional tasks by assessing which team members had more complex or time-consuming projects. Based on the workload, I would distribute secondary tasks to team members who didn’t have as many complex tasks to complete. I also think it’s important to rotate tasks every so often to allow team members to learn new skills and regain motivation.”

3.           Why did you decide to become an academic coordinator?

How to answer:  Interviewers commonly ask this question to gauge your knowledge about academic advising roles and your experience gained prior to the interview. Effective responses often include personal anecdotes that display your passion and may allow interviewers to ask follow-up questions about your credentials.

Answer: “I struggled early in my academic career to find what I wanted to do, as I had several interests but difficulty narrowing my career path. Working with an academic adviser helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses, which led me to not only excel in school but realize that I also wanted to be a source of reliable information and comfort for students who feel the same confusion I felt.”
